UC Application opens August 1 · Deadline: November 30 · Essays are best written the summer before 12th grade
The UC Personal Insight Questions (PIQs) are four essays, each up to 350 words, that you choose from a set of eight prompts. They are a required part of the UC Application and one of the only places where you can speak directly to who you are. What UC readers want from these essays is specific, and different from what most students expect.
The students who do well on the UC essays are not necessarily the best writers. They are the students who understood what the reader was looking for before they started writing. This free guide walks you through every prompt so you can choose well and write with confidence.

All 8 UC prompts, covered in the guide
You choose 4 of these 8 to answer. The guide tells you what each one is really asking for.
You do not need a title. Any time you help the group, you are a leader.
Show how you release what is on the inside. The prompt is open to interpretation.
Start low so you can go high. Development is everything here.
Show how you take an active approach to your own learning.
Aim for a 20/80 ratio of problem to solution. You do not need to fully resolve it.
Write about you, not the subject. Pick a specific topic, not a broad field.
This does not have to be a service essay. Define your community broadly.
Tell a story that captures who you are and that does not repeat other parts of your application.
Not sure which 4 to pick? The guide includes strategic tips for choosing the right combination of prompts based on what you have to say and what your application needs to show.
If you are just beginning, it helps you choose the right four prompts and start strong. If you are already in it, it helps you check that you are giving the reader exactly what they are looking for. Either way, you will write better essays because of it.
I'll send it straight to your inbox.
